Tasting Notes

Tasted blind at David Wainwright’s 40th bacchanal in Brighton. Wow! Even the champagne sages present commented that this was the best bottle they had ever encountered. The bouquet almost embarrasses the Krug ’79 poured alongside, clear honey, acacia, a touch of walnut, straw and melted better with an arresting sense of clarity and other-worldly lift. The palate is vibrant and zest on the entry with incredible tension, counterpoised by a sense of effortlessness and harmony. Fleeting glimpses of gooseberry, green lemon, passion fruit and mandarin leading to a more minerally finish surfeit with nervosite. There is a thrilling sense of power married with paradoxical understatedness. Amazing. Drink now-2019+ Tasted June 2009.

All older vintages of Dom Perignon develop a clear note of roasted coffee beans. The 71′ is filled with such aroma. The taste is a little narrower than the 73’s and without its walnut notes, but the aftertaste is actually longer. The wine feels almost more fascinating every time I come across it.
