Having tasted many fine examples in Burgundy last November, It’s remarkable how good the wine quality turned out from such a minuscule vintage.
The Wines
The whites have a fine level of acidity, vibrant fruit intensity with underlying mineral tension that reminds us of the 2017s.
The best reds are classic, cool with attractive fleshy red fruits, moderate alcohols and balanced acidities. The tannins are gentle and the wines express their terroir. They are similar to the 2021s in style and finesse.
The Weather
The 2024 Burgundy vintage has faced significant weather challenges. The season was marked by frost, hail, mildew, coulure and a notable 55% above-average rainfall, leading to a very small crop. Some growers reported their smallest yields ever. Domaine Tawse and AF Gros lost almost 100% of their grapes in their prized Pommard and Savigny les Beaune vineyards.
Chardonnay seems to have performed better than Pinot Noir, particularly in regions like Côte de Beaune and Mâconnais. In contrast, Chablis, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, experienced particularly low yields.
