Tasting Notes
Richard Juhlin 92
It is perhaps a trifle surprising that Bollinger with its Grand Annee concept releases a champagne in such a weak year as 1997. They have however succeeded once again in making one of the jewels of the vintage. Where most of their competitors so totally lack weight and concentration, this Bollinger rumbles forth with heavy autumn-like aromas and tastes. The aroma is genuinely typical with layers of hazelnut, chocolate, mature apples, tobacco and bread. The taste is full and sufficiently strong to cope with most food combinations. The weakness of the vintage first begins to have effect in the aftertaste in the form of an abrupt, light finish. Only a slight hint of dried fruit and vanilla is still left on the tongue straight after one has swallowed the wine.
