Tasting Notes
John Gilman 92
(Clos Vougeot- Domaine Hudelot-Noellat) The 1990 Clos Vougeot from Alain Hudelot is a fine example of the vintage. It is funny, as I shared this wine with a fairly large group of tasters in the early summer of this year and several thought it was not showing well because of its roasted personality, but that is just the style of this vintage. When it was first decanted it showed a funky, fairly overripe aromatic profile, but this freshened up decisively with a bit of air to eventually offer up notes of baked plums, black cherries, venison, sous bois, bonfire, chocolate, cedary oak and a dollop of fresh herb tones in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very nicely balanced, with a plush core of gently roasted fruit, good soil signature, modest tannins and fine length and grip on the finish. This is a quintessential example of the 1990 vintage, with a fairly roasted fruit personality that also displays excellent depth, complexity and fine balance. Good juice, but very much a creature of its vintage. (Drink between 2021-2050)
