Tasting Notes
Burghound 89
This hadn’t come my way since 2010 and this most recentl bottle is now displaying moderate to heavy secondary development on the floral and very spicy nose. The big, powerful, intense and very concentrated flavors are underpinned by a still relatively firm, indeed even robust tannins on the otherwise solidly lingering finish. On the plus side, this is complex, big-bodied and dramatic but the structure such that it requires food to enjoy and it will probably always have an edge. While this could certainly continue to be held, I don’t see it necessarily improving from here and I would be drinking it over the next 20 years or so. Note that a bottle tasted in October 2014 seemed less than completely clean and while I didn’t attribute this to TCA, there was something clearly amiss and I did not rate it. In sum, as I noted, this is certainly a dramatic effort but not one of the great vintages for Leroy’s RSV.

The fully mature 1989 Romanee-St.-Vivant has an amber/ruby color and lovely caramelized spice aromas. Its medium-bodied, tangy strawberry-flavored character gives the impression that its best days are behind it. An excellent wine at present, it will not ameliorate with cellaring. Drink up.
Anticipated maturity: 2000-2000
