Tasting Notes
Vinous 99
The 1979 Cristal is easily one of the greatest Champagnes I have ever had the privilege of tasting and drinking. A wine of breath and volume, the 1979 blossoms on the palate with a heady melange of flavors and textures that will leave the most experiences of Champagne drinkers weak at the knees. Orange peel, crushed flowers and exotic spices are some of the many notes that linger on the finish. Of course provenance is key with older wines, but the 1979 Cristal quite simply is as good as it gets. Well-stored bottles still preserve plenty of the acidity and energy that is one of the hallmarks of this great Champagne vintage.

For a long time this wine was undeveloped and young. At the age of twenty-two years, however, all its bits and pieces are in the right places. The nose is wonderful, with its elegance and peachy intensity. Now there are also delicious notes of roasted lobster shell and black truffles. The taste is superb, with an incredibly rich, exotic fruitiness. The height of elegance together with nutty, smoky complex maturity.

Tasted at the IMW Louis Roederer tasting. Disgorged September 1985. A clear straw colour. The ’79 Cristal has a well defined ripe honeyed, quite toasty nose, touches of melted butter, hazelnut, some mushroom developing with time and a hint of honeycomb/beeswax. Close your eyes: you could imagine this as a red wine! The palate is just superb: vibrant and complex with brioche, honeycomb, lanolin, a touch of marmalade, wonderful tension and weight towards the orange zest and strawberry infused finish. Outstanding. Drink now-2020+ Tasted December 2009.

Magnum. Disgorged in 1984. 64% PN, 36% Chardonnay, 10% oak fermentation. Very late harvest. Oct 10 start. Note serious bottle variation! Bright golden, almost Lucozade. Like the 1988, my magnum not as frank as the other. Rather chewy finish. Jagged, not flattering. Awkward even. Good laciness but not as tightly wound as some. But then the other magnum was quite spectacular – gloriously complex and with a firm toastiness underneath. At its peak surely but glorious drinking now.
