Tasting Notes

The 1959 Cheval Blanc was a bottle that had been acquired directly from the chateau and boy, did that provenance show on this spectacular Saint Emilion. It seemed to glisten in the glass and showed little ageing on the rim. The nose is explosive with beguiling pure black cherries, wild strawberry, sage, crushed violets and just a touch of glycerine. The delineation, the detail here is exemplary. The palate is an intoxicating mixture of succulent lush red fruit that disguise the backbone underneath. This is such a vivid and vivacious Saint Emilion one that to me feels more Merlot-driven than Cabernet Franc. It gather momentum in the glass and finishes with layers of red fruit tinged with clove and bay leaf. Without question this is the finest bottle of 1959 Cheval Blanc that I have tasted – a simply magnificent wine.

Pierre Lurton served this to JF Moueix 10 years ago and discussed the relative merits of 1959 and 1961 – theoretically. Soon afterwards JFM served him pairs of all of the first growths fro 1961 and 1959 – pas mal!. Warm summer, 28 Sep – 10 Oct, 28 hl/ha. I am very very impressed by this wine. Truly glorious. Lots of freshness and good fresh deep colour, Velvet texture. Very complex and concentrated. Very similar colour to the 1961 but slightly yellow rim. Extraordinary richness and length. Great life as well as richness. Very long and glossy and apparently infinite.

Tasted at an off-line lunch at The Ledbury. Just a soupcon delivered to our table, but wow, what a soupcon! The nose is spellbinding: opulent and ravishing with fruit cake, raisin, fresh fig rolls and dates all with stunning definition. The palate is medium-bodied, very typical of the vintage with ripe red-berried fruit, fig, vanilla and candied orange peel. Lovely balance, low acidity, sensuous towards the finish with a touch of orange liqueur on the aftertaste. Next time, I would like more than a soupcon. Tasted October 2009.
