Harvest - One of the fastest on record producing an abundance of juicy aromatic fruit. High humidity and warm summer temperatures meant an early picking window was necessary to avoid the spread of non-desirable fungal diseases.

Wine quality - Riesling excelled producing wines with bracing acidity, high dry extract and moderate alcohols, making elegant and expressive Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese Prädikat. There was very little sweet Beerenauslese, TBA or Eiswein made. This vintage was more successful for the drier styles, like Kabinett and the Grosses Gewächs.

Prüm successfully produced 3 Goldkapsels. Bernkasteler Ley, Bernkasteler Bastube and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Fritz Haag in the Mosel said there was a perfect balance between the fruit ripeness and acid in their Brauneberger. Christoph Schaefer of Willi Schaeffer, in Graach, mentioned that this was a vintage of ‘elegance and finesse with depth and complexity’. Dönnhoff in the Nahe were delighted with the clarity and harmonious balance of their range.

The prices are fair and the quality is often sensational. The 2024 vintage was decimated by frost so just as well there are good volumes of these thrilling 2023s to make up for it.
