Château Palmer, Margaux

The Third Growth Making First Growth Quality

Chateau Palmer is consistently producing wines that rival the First Growths, in terms of finesse, depth, and aging potential. Originally classified as a Third Growth Margaux in the 1855 Classification, but over recent decades, it has outperformed its ranking making wines with extraordinary precision, balance and elegance.

The estate’s 55 hectares of vineyards sit on a prime site with gravel, clay, and sand contributing to its distinctive complexity—a rich finely textured blend of almost identical percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, rounded off with around 5% Petit Verdot.

Chateau Palmer became fully biodynamic in 2014. They plough by horse, adopt natural treatments for vineyard health and hand-harvest to maximise the character from each vintage. In the winery natural yeasts are cultivated to enhance the pure style. Elevage, or aging, takes place in carefully selected French oak barrels, with a balance of 60-70% new oak for the Grand Vin over 20 months.

Our selection of vintages display the gradual evolution of the house style, including some top-scoring legendary vintages such as 1982,1983, 2005 and modern day classics since 2010, under management by head winemaker - Thomas Duroux.
